Emergency Medical Responder

Course Description

  • This course provides the knowledge and skills that are necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness for those functioning as a member of the health care team in a pre-hospital setting.
  • This course is for those providing a professional level of emergency response including firefighters, law-enforcement officers, and emergency medical services personnel.
  • EMR program is designed for the individual who wants to enter the BC Ambulance Service or work as an EMR in industry.
  • The program was developed by the Red Cross - our Training Partner, and it's instructors have been authorized by the Red Cross to offer this program.           
  • Meets the Paramedic Association of Canada National Occupational Competency Profiles for the practitioner level of emergency medical responder (EMR).
  • This EMR program is recognized by both the federal and provincial governments of Canada. The Emergency Medical Responder course has been approved and recognized by the EMA Licensing Branch of British Columbia.


  • Once the student is finished this course and if the exam is passed, student will receive a completion certificate which is a 3 year certification. This will also include CPR HCP, and AED.
  • Must attend 100% of the course (skill demonstration, 2 evaluated scenarios, and 80% minimum passing grade on written exam).
  • The individual must arrange to take their EMA licensing exams through the EMA Licensing Branch.  A student must not work as an EMR until the EMA licensing exam is passed (liability issues).  EMALB currently charged $450 for written and practical exams but this is subject to change. Discuss this with your instructor.  If exams are not passed, student cannot work as an EMR.

Admission Requirements and Prerequisites

  • Prerequisites:
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR C or Current EMR certification *Preferable to already be a Level 3 ticket holder
  • Must be 16 years of age to be certified
  • Be in good health and physical condition
  • Highly recommended for students to have completed 'English 10; or higher.
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Complete all prereading and homework before the first day.
  • Provide photographic identification to the instructor prior to issuance of a certificate.
  • Complete registration form prior to course commencement
  • Provide a parent or guardian signature if under 16
